Undoubtedly, Linux gives you a better environment for programming. First, install Java, and then choose Linux on the NetBeans website and download the complete version (a file with .sh fuffix). To install Java on Ubuntu, run:

sudo apt-get install openjdk-7-jre

To install NetBeans on Ubuntu, go to the directory where you downloaded that NetBeans file and run the following command in the terminal:

bash file-name

For instance:

bash netbeans.sh
